Evaluating <scp>PE</scp> / <scp>PLA</scp> interfacial tension using ternary immiscible polymer blends

چکیده

Blending with ethylene-based flexible polymers such as polyethylene (PE) is one of the strategies to toughen poly(lactic acid) (PLA), an inherently brittle biodegradable plastic enjoying growing demands worldwide. Interfacial tension plays a crucial role in blend formulation. Yet several literature reports on PE/PLA interfacial contradict each other, giving ~5 mN/m and ~11 mN/m. In this work, we demonstrate that at least 9 We use cocontinuous PE/polystyrene (PS)/PLA ternary blend. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed complete wetting morphology PS phase separating PE PLA phases addition, behavior was maintained volume fraction low 3%. This together Harkins equation, indicate higher than 10.5 ± 1.4 180°C.

Particle-induced bridging in immiscible polymer blends

Pickering emulsions are emulsions whose drops are stabilized against coalescence by particles adsorbed at their interface. Recent research on oil/water/particle systems shows that particles can sometimes adsorb at two oil/ water interfaces. Such “bridging particles” can glue together drops of oil in water or vice versa. We hypothesize that the same effect should apply in immiscible polymer blen...

Compatibilization of immiscible polymer blends using graphene oxide sheets.

By taking the advantage of the unique amphiphilic structure of graphene oxide sheets (GOSs), we develop here a new and effective strategy for compatibilizing immiscible polymer blends. With the incorporation of only 0.5 wt % GOSs into immiscible polyamide/polyphenylene oxide (PA/PPO, 90/10) blends, the droplet diameter of the dispersed minor phase (PPO) is dramatically reduced by more than 1 or...

Compatibilized Immiscible Polymer Blends for Gas Separations

Membrane-based gas separation has attracted a great deal of attention recently due to the requirement for high purity gasses in industrial applications like fuel cells, and because of environment concerns, such as global warming. The current methods of cryogenic distillation and pressure swing adsorption are energy intensive and costly. Therefore, polymer membranes have emerged as a less energy...

Interfacial slip in sheared polymer blends.

We have developed a dynamic self-consistent field theory, without any adjustable parameters, for unentangled polymer blends under shear. Our model accounts for the interaction between polymers, and enables one to compute the evolution of the local rheology, microstructure, and the conformations of the polymer chains under shear self-consistently. We use this model to study the interfacial dynam...

Rheology and Morphology Development in Immiscible Polymer Blends

In this review, progress towards a fundamental understanding of the rheologymorphology relationship in immiscible polymer blends is discussed. The behaviour of biphasic polymer fluids, containing Newtonian components and subjected to simple shear flows is relatively well understood at present. The behaviour of these “simple” blends will be discussed first, as it serves as a reference for the ot...
